The last bank holiday of the month is here and it’s also time for some half term holiday fun!

The weather is looking glorious so what better to enjoy it than to get out and discover Gainsborough and the surrounding area!

Here’s some ideas to get you started…

Become a history hunter

Gainsborough is home to one of the best-preserved, timber framed manor houses in England dating back to the fifteenth century. Wander the corridors of Gainsborough Old Hall or climb up to the top of the tower for views across the town and beyond.

Gainsborough Heritage Centre also offers a fascinating insight in to the history of the town through exhibitions and period displays.

If the weather in on your side, head out and explore the town using the heritage trial. This self-led trail will take you to some of the most iconic sites and some lesser known places, giving you a fun (and free) afternoon out.

A jam-packed line up of live music is planned at Marshalls Sports Ground. The event raises money and awareness for those suffering with mental health.

Behind the Garden Wall at Uncle Henry’s

The fairies are awake! It’s been a long time coming but the Behind the Garden Wall opens its gates on May 27th for the whole of May Half Term with the fairy trail being open for the first time this year, for you to take on the woodland trolls!

Family Days Out

Just a short drive from Gainsborough will bring you to Bransby Horses, a welfare charity that cares for nearly 1000 horses, donkeys and mules. They have a visitor centre and café, play park, plus miles of footpaths that allow visitors to meet their equine friends – free admission! If you’re looking for something more hands on; why not visit Rand Farm Park?! It’s Baby Dino week during half term, so come along and meet Rita the Baby T-Rex at intervals throughout the day, conquer the play, meet the animals on the farm, and take a tractor ride all for £8.50 per person when booking online, under 1s go FREE! You can also take a drive out to Hall Farm Park (30 minutes from Gainsborough), a family run working farm with lots of things to see and do giving visitors a unique experience, including tractor rides and goat walking! They’ve also made some fabulous upgrades to their soft play area for toddlers. Woodside Wildlife Park also offers hands-on access to some exciting animals!

Get out and explore

Get out and enjoy the warm summer breeze with a number of local woods just outside Gainsborough including Owlet Wood with its network of footpaths, which are dry all year round thanks to the sandy soil. Owlet is largely flat and there are no steps or other obstructions.

The Lincolnshire Wolds is under an hour’s drive away offer breath-taking scenery and vast open countryside. It’s also their annual Outdoor Festival, so why not take a look at what on offer? There are a number of walking routes around Market Rasen; plus the town’s interactive heritage trail has 20 stops offering surprising insights to the town’s past. Willingham Woods is also popular with walkers and cyclists and is a great stop off if you’re visiting the coast. Wrights of Willingham Ice Cream Parlor is also just 2 minutes down the road and offering delicious gelato ice cream using fresh milk from their farm.

If you’re more energetic then Wild Pines Park is the place to be! It’s one of the largest rope courses in UK offering you the chance for a unique and adventurous day out. They have also just announced some new exciting additions to the park so worth a visit this half term! Play World in Gainsborough also gives you a chance to have a few minutes to yourself while the kids blow off some steam.
