‘Love, Gainsborough’ at this year’s Illuminate event
Illuminate Gainsborough returns Saturday 9 March 2024 with its beautiful lantern parade and magnificent fire garden. Previous years have marked the town’s connection to the Mayflower Pilgrims’ story. This year’s theme is ‘Love, Gainsborough’, reflecting on the town and its communities.
Don’t miss out! Take a look what’s happening on the day!
Monthly Farmers & Craft Market
Open 9am to 2pm, followed by an Illuminate market through the afternoon and evening (2pm to 8pm), with a range of food and craft stalls.
Illuminate Lantern Parade
Join the parade starting at 5.30pm, starting in Lord Street. The parade will make its way through the town centre via the Market Place and then Church Street, ending adjacent to the Parish Church in Gladstone Street.
Please note children should be accompanied by a responsible guardian; road closures will be in place.
Make your own lantern at home (using a milk bottle or clear jar for example) or join us on the day to make one (more details below).
From 6pm, fire sculptures will be set alight and performers will dance and entertain visitors in the grounds of All Saints’ Parish Church, and the grounds of Gainsborough Old Hall will host a display of lanterns and performers until 7.30pm. The Old Hall’s shop and café will also be open, and refreshments will be available in the Parish Church.
Make your own lantern
Everyone is invited to take part in Illuminate 2024 by making their own LED lit lanterns and candles at home using ideas from an online toolkit below.
There will also be a free public lantern making workshop at All Saints’ Parish Church on Saturday 9th March between 10.30am and 2pm (drop in at any time). You can then bring them to the Illuminate event, adding more colour and light to the commemorations.
